Maya Kaqchikel Indigenous Community of Sumpango and others v. Guatemala: Home

About

On December 17, 2021, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights announced its decision in the case Indigenous Maya Kaqchikel Peoples of Sumpango vs. Guatemala, declaring the Republic of Guatemala “internationally responsible for the violation of the rights to freedom of expression, equality before the law and participation in the cultural life of Indigenous Peoples.

In its judgment, the Court ordered reparations that Guatemala must fulfill to redress these violations, including reforming domestic law to ensure that indigenous communities have access to the radio frequency spectrum and the ability to operate community radio stations, broadcasting information in their own languages.

The purpose of this website is to provide information on the Court’s judgment and to monitor the implementation of the court-ordered reparations. The website also includes details on the victim communities, the NGOs and lawyers involved in the case, case documents, and various media resources.
